Universal Services is the enterprise IT solutions center for the departments and offices of Harris County, providing Information Technology, Public Safety and Justice Technologies, 311 Constituent Engagement Services, Fleet Services, and Records and Information Governance Services.

Harris County Commissioners Court, the County’s governing body, directs a budget of more than $4 billion providing essential services including flood control, infrastructure, healthcare, housing, and justice administration.

Position Overview:



Work with a multi-discipline team managing an enterprise Linux environment


Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Installs, configures, maintains and performs system integration testing of Linux based operating systems, related utilities and hardware.
  • Responsible for troubleshooting Linux operating system and software problems.
  • Monitors systems activities and fine tunes system parameters and configuration to optimize performance and ensure security of systems.
  • Requires understanding of logging and monitoring tools.
  • Performs capacity and disk utilization analysis and possess a thorough understanding of automation technologies such as Ansible.
  • Understand Linux networking involving firewalls, DNS, DHCP, and routing concepts.
  • Able to understand and write in common scripting platforms including Python and shell script.
  • Develops procedures for routine administration including shutdown and start-up and other maintenance related operations.
  • In depth understanding of Redhat Satellite and identity access management platforms (IPA).
  • Provides recommendations for improving the server environment, such as capacity thresholds, addressing security gaps, system patching, and hardening/compliance requirements.
  • Ability to define procedures for monitoring and evaluate diagnoses and establish work plan to resolve system issues.
  • Perform troubleshooting for complex software and network problems.
  • Work on multiple projects as a project team member, occasionally as a project leader.
  • Ability to coach more junior technical staff.
  • In-depth knowledge of OpenSSL and GPG encryption as well as container-based technologies
  • Working understanding of cloud environments (OCI, Azure, AWS) including virtualization technologies.

Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited educational institution.


Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of RedHat Linux experience and associated technologies including IPA, Ansible, and Satellite.
  • Requires a high level of expertise in multiple system environments with emphasis in Linux-based systems.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to script and perform command line operations.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or related field


Experience:

  • 5 years or more of IT work experience with Linux systems including automation technologies and IPA


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Proficient in scripting and command line operations.


General Information

Work Arrangement:

  • Onsite 5 days/week


Work Schedule:

  • 8 hours/day


Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
